York Chamber Music Festival

Message from Tim Lowe – Festival Artistic Director

“The festival aims to bring some of the UK’s best chamber musicians to York with the specific aim of involving York’s young musicians and young people and giving them an opportunity not only to hear these players but to talk and work with them in masterclasses. As part of the festival a national competition will bring aspiring chamber music groups to York from the national conservatoires, music colleges and university music departments.

Highlights of the first festival include:

• A violin recital with Jennifer Pike – BBC Young Musician of the year in 2002
• A piano recital by Martin Roscoe
• A cello recital by Tim Lowe and James Baillieu.
• Competition for Young Musicians
• Masterclasses.

The cost of entrance has been kept down and some events are free of charge thanks to generous donations from local sponsors keen to see York’s young people engage with ‘new generation’, internationally renowned chamber musicians.

The programme is built around core repertoire but includes some lesser-known works because, whether young or older, we want to stimulate peoples’ curiosity and imagination. I do hope you will support this new initiative in the musical life of York and enjoy what we have to offer. For details of the festival programme go to www.yorkchambermusicfestival.co.uk

I am very excited about this new venture, which I hope will become a fixture in the musical life of York and the region. We have already secured funding from across the city from private sponsors keen to support the festival and I am hoping to build up this fund to secure its future.

The opportunity for young players to have masterlasses with internationally famous musicians is a great chance to engage face-to-face with these fantastic players. And for all of us a long weekend of lovely music making in my beautiful home city of York will hopefully lift our spirits in the dark winter days and remind us that Spring is just round the corner!”
